I keep forgetting that I planned to maintain this, still have a "version 2" in mind, but professional contracts (that have yet to pan out properly) delay me, along with some voracious reading and watching of anime.

Phone
Got my phone nicked (or lost) the other day, really irritating. I've lost a few months worth of mobile contacts, fortunately none that I can't get back. I still had an old SIM containing most of my contacts which I transferred to one of my old phones today. Same number etc, love vodafone smile

iPod
I got an iPod nano yesterday and have become enamoured with the iTunes music management system as a result. It's a really nice all-around package, and I've already sought out a few "podcasts" that I had neglected until now.

Ah, I intended to do a write up of my recent visit to Monza to see the World Cyber Games in action; so I must do that.

My intention to turn this into a reasonably readable blog have failed miserably thusfar, hopefully working on a new system will give me renewed perserverence wink

Exams over

Exams are over, summer has begun, so it's now time to get down to the fun part of doing college, personal projects.

I have been wracking my brain for particularily good ideas all day, mostly just trying to think of decent domain names; must get around to registering with the CRO so I can actually get a dot ie domain.

So, not very successful on the domain name front, but I have notions of resurrecting my fiction writing, so that's on the cards, and I'll have some background work to do for EirtaKon 2006.

On the technical front I'll be using some design methodology I've learned this year to design a new web system for one of my sites (that means here, eirtaku, eirtakon, or wthax).

Plus I've to add a few categories to this site so I'll be more enticed to write.

Things to write about (notes to myself really):
- 3V cards
- Public Transport
- Delerium (the music, not the state of mind)

That's some regular old real life stuff to write about anyway.

...then this would be a blog site.

I really haven't been paying enough attention to this site of late, busy worrying about a hundred deadlines, exams, work and most surprisingly, life.

Anyone remember me announcing that I had purchased a domain some time ago? No? Didn't think so. It was about nine months ago, I decided that I needed something that wasn't just a subdomain of another site (as much as I love redbrick), so I bought wthax.org.

I really couldn't think of anything to do with it, after all, I have pretty much everything I need on redbrick, though it became rapidly apparent that space was going to be a concern smile
To cut a long story short, I turned the domain into a image hosting service. You can never have enough image hosts, and imageshack have had a bit of a tiffle with SomethingAwful, so I can no longer use it to host screenshots of hilarious anime hijinks!

After exam madness takes a break for a couple of months next week, I can get back to the important stuff, like updating this site smile
So, I guess weekly updates will start from then. Plenty of stuff I do these days so I shouldn't be short of writing material. Let's see where it takes us anyhoo.

Rocketman - William Shatner, Stewie Griffin

I don't have a category for "lolz", so I'll just use General.

If YouTube.com is useful for anything, it's for half-remembered clips of videos you saw ages ago but can't remember where.

You might have seen Stewie in an episode of Family Guy singing "Rocketman", from three different perspectives, sitting on a stool.

You also may have been wondering what the hell that was all about. Well, to refresh you memory, if you don't remember that particular clip, here's a link to it on youtube.

This particular clip is based on a somewhat infamous performance by William Shatner at the Television Science Fiction awards many moons ago. The clip is hilarious mostly because of how seriously Shatner takes his performance in it. Shatner has, in subsequent years, mellowed, and realized that people find him funny, and now plays to that; but this is from the time when he took himself rather seriously as an actor.

here is that video.

My redbrick account got hacked and everything was deleted. Which I thought rather mean. They also managed to hack some other stuff, but weren't nearly as mean as they could have been about that, so it could have been a lot worse.

All back now anyhoo thanks to the awesome and mystifying powers of phaxx and atlas smile

Cheers guys.

Million Dollar Homepage

Million dollar ideas.

We're still fresh from the hype surrounding MillionDollarHomepage.com, and if you don't know about it you'd want to get out from under that rock smile

Pretty shortly, people will be looking for the "next big thing" online and I'll be damned if I know what it is. I think the most important factor in the success of MDHP was its pure simplicity. Retrospectively, anyone can point to reasons why the site was so popular, so I'd be doing nothing different in writing about that.

What I'm more interested in is just how different that "next thing" I mentioned will be. The original concept of MDHP has now been replicated hundreds of times all over the web by people attempting to hop on the frenzy surrounding the original site. Doubtless some of these will make a bit of money off the back of MDHP, but none of them will be nearly as successful and eventual saturation is inevitable.

There are a few key aspects of web phenomena over recent years;

1. Original
2. Virally Marketed
3. Simple
4. Lucky

It's a bit of a cop-out to attribute the success of any endeavour to luck, but it is reasonably accurate in most cases. Whether it is the right person stumbling across the soon-to-be phenomena or just being the right time for the idea.
The thing is, online you can influence this "luck" to a certain extent. Search Engine Optimization is quite generally useful; making it that bit more likely that your idea will be picked up by people.

Viral marketing is a powerful way of something becoming well known, and has become very important online. There are various ways in which viral marketing is employed (Google's Gmail service, for example) but for the single person, simple quality of content is the most important factor. Essentially, being original will beget viral marketing, word of mouth advertising.

The next big thing will be nothing like MDHP, but it will be a product of the current web environment, the social structure.

In the end, it seems that the most successfull ideas are those which make you say to yourself, "that's stupidly simple... why didn't I think of that?".

Think stupid, but stop thinking about the Million Dollar Homepage smile

Seeing as I'm about to head off for the evening, happy new year all!

I've just written a BBCode function for the admin section, will have a simpler version for the comments section (for links, pretty much) and will likely write one for some smilies.

Some other little UI tweaks like the focus highlighting for the textarea and input tags, etc.

Have a craic'in night smile

That there is a single page on my site accounting for 200,000 hits a month, and is likely a reason for so many people just dropping into the main site out of general curiosity.

The stats program is a bit weak, but I figure this thread is responsible for a good deal of those hits smile

So hello to all the Gorillamask blow-ins who likely have absolutely no interest in this site. I'll try to make it more interesting wink

I've decided not to make the source of the site available as an installable content management system (yet). I don't want to release something half-assed.

I will, however, be starting to write the tutorials section shortly, detailing how the various parts of the site were developed. It's a labour of love, and still very much a work in progress.

I plan to begin professional contracting soon; I've been procrastinating over the rather simple process of registering a business name, so that needs to be worked out.

Oh and happy Christmas!

Fix for bad comments

I'm using a very basic image verification system for posts.

The smart bots may be able to circumvent it because I haven't made it a randomly generated image yet, (that's the next step!), but normal stupid bots won't be able to get around it, so hopefully that'll cull the spam tide.

Check out Mehpong_Planetarion, a game designed and created by a mate. Good craic and at 20MB for the download, it's not going to take long to download wink

Well, anyone who has visited the site recently will have noticed that spambots descended upon my territory leaving massive comments which fecked up article pages.

This forced me to add a comment management facility to the site which I hadn't bothered with before. Thus improving the admin panel of the site (which is great for me, or anyone who gets the site engine when I make it available).
