After the grueling training exercises and intense studying Sorel finely managed to make it through Jugend. While in the school he had wanted nothing
more than to make it out alive. But now that he had finally done it, he felt oddly bored. Like a piece of his soul was missing. He actually had grown to miss those days back in the school. Although his time at Jugend was a hard one he had had friend to bear the pain with him. And those adventures late at night to raid the kitchen in the cafeteria were actually quite exciting. But he had to put all that behind him now, no longer was he that child from what seemed an eternity ago. He had to decide what to do with his life. He decided that he wanted to get out and see the world. His spirit was just too free to be contained and every day more that he spend in Solaris, it seemed that more of his life was being sucked out of him. He already had impressive skills in military tactics and combat maneuvers. So off he went to the military to lend his skills for the good of Solaris.
The day before his first day of official active duty, he decided to get a good night's rest. But somehow he just couldn't sleep, tired as he was. As he tossed and turned in his bed his thoughts drifted to his grandfather. It must have been years since he last heard from him. Having a grandfather who was also one of the highest generals in gebler was never something easy to
live up to. It seemed to him that no matter how hard he tried; he could never live up to the expectations that people demanded of him. At last as he drifted off to sleep, he thought of how happy he was to finally get away from Solaris and into the field. With luck, he would never see his
grandfather again.
Early the next morning he was on his way through the busy streets of Entrenak, when his army issue beeper went off. He received a message telling him to report to the lounge immediately. He hurried off to the lounge wondering what anyone could want from him. As he walked down long hallways that brought him to the lounge a thought popped into his head. His worst
fears were confirmed when he saw his grandfather sitting down, reading a magazine; obviously waiting for him. Though he felt much disdain toward his grandfather, he was more curious as to why his grandfather chose to break the unwritten rule of excommunication he had declared on his grandfather after so long, as well as a slight pang of sensitivity left over from previous arguments that he remembered so well. The steadfast scab of time had been broken.
This conversation was to be short, he hoped. "Sorel, my grandson, come sit with me." his father said. Sorel complied and walked over slowly to his grandfather's seat. A strong feeling of apprehension told him he didn't want
to know what was coming. "I believe that it is time for you to show your true colors as a Samirla, to be a commander as your father, I, and my parents before that, I believe that a promotion is in order." Sorel insists ,"Promotions should be based off of skill! Not inheritance!" His grandfather
replies "You are a Samirla and will act like one! Would you dare impugn the Samirla honor by not accepting this gift!? If it were not for me, you would be begging for food on the slums of the third class. Above all, even being a Samirla, you are a Gazel you will uphold our honor or you can wriggle around in the dirt like one of those repulsive lambs!! I am promoting you to
Lieutenant!" As he hands him the golden medal, and Gebler uniform insignia his grandfather says firmly "I won't have another argument!!" His grandfather dropped the case and stalked off, nearly knocking over a servant down the hallway.
After his long day at work, Sorel returned to his quarters to find the case sitting on his bed, a note next to it saying that he was "Promoted, and should get used to it". He now insists on proving his skill to rightfully to
be a First Lieutenant.
