In other words my comp is being annoying as hell, thanks to Windows XP we had to do an entire system format and reinstall everything. At the moment it should be resolved shortly but I make no guarentees.

Did you try installing XP on top of 98/98SE/ME? Not a good move. Everywhere I've read and everyone I've asked recommends/insists that a clean install is the only way to move to XP.
