Round One Tasks 2009-2010

The tasks for this year's first-round contest have been released!

 

Here are the details:

Number of tasks: FOUR (Free Rooks, Free Rooks II, Digit Dilemma, Alan the Apple Robot)

Deadline for submission: Monday 11th January 2010

Do I need to solve all the tasks? No, just complete as many as you can.

What programming language should I use? We recommend C or C++, as these languages are used in the final round. However, in the 1st round we will also accept BASIC, Pascal, Java or Python.

What happens after the deadline? You will be emailed to let you know if you have qualified for the final round of the contest (so make sure your email address is correct). The contest will take place at the end of January.

How many people are selected for the Irish programming team after the final round? Four people will be selected to travel (all-expenses-paid) to Canada in the Summer of 2010. The final round results determine a panel of contestants (of at most 8 people), from which the team is chosen.

How do I submit my solutions? First, register on the forum. Then when you click on a task name (such as clicking on "Free Rooks" in the right-hand panel, there will be a text-box at the end of the task description. Paste your code into this box, and you click "Submit Code" to submit your entry.

Bronze Medal at the IOI

David McCarthy from C.B.S Midleton in Co. Cork was awarded a Bronze Medal at the 21st International Olympiad in Informatics, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. David was a member of the Irish delegation, representing the island of Ireland at the contest. The delegation included contestants Brian Walsh, Simon Free and Jared Auty, and was led by team leader Dr. Ciarán Ó Conaire and deputy leader Stephen Dolan.

Final Contest Results

The Final Round took place in DCU on Saturday 31st January. The contestants were given a set of four difficult problems to solve in 4 hours and 40 minutes. The overall winner was David McCarthy, who got full marks, correctly solving all four tasks.

Final Round Contest

The 1st round of the contest is over and the finalists have been notified of their acceptance

The final round will take place in Dublin City University on Saturday 31st January 2009.

Schedule
9.30 am: Registration at the Computer Applications Building (directly in front of the SPAR shop)
10.00 am - 2.40 pm: Contest (4 hours 40 minutes)
4.00 pm - 5.00 pm: Closing - Award Ceremony (Larkin Theatre, circular building opposite Helix theatre).
All finalists are requested and expected to attend the closing ceremony.
