What
is all this?
This is the website of the Dublin City University "Murder, She
Wrote" Society. The society is dedicated to the enjoyment and
appreciation of this classic detective series and holds events for
its members throughout the year celebrating the show.
But what is "Murder, She Wrote"?
We really hope that you haven't missed out on seeing this show at
least once in your life, but just in case you've been that unfortunate;
Murder, She Wrote is a murder-mystery detective show, in
which the crimes are solved by an old lady called Jessica B. Fletcher.
Many people prefer this kitsch show, which ran originally from 1984
to 1996, to more modern detective series because of its quirky heroine
and rigid narrative structure. Pretty much the same thing happened
in every episode:
Jessica visits a friend, someone is murdered, the police falsely accuse
one of Jessica's friends, Jessica steps in and (using a combination
of nosiness, superior deduction and entrapment) she solves the mystery
and exposes the true villain.
It's a testament to the excellence of this formula that Murder,
She Wrote became one of the longest-running detective shows in
television history.
So, this is a society dedicated to a
tv show?
Yup. DCU MSWsoc was founded in 2004 by 5 students dedicated to providing
an outlet on campus for the enjoyment of this excellent tv show. We
love the show and we had a sneaking suspicion that other people probably
did too. We were right - DCU MSWsoc became the biggest new society
in 2004 and the surge of interested people who signed up made it one
of the biggest societies on campus overall.
What does the society do?
As well as screening the Murder, She Wrote, the society is committed
to providing a range of events from murder mystery parties and weekends
away, to talks on forensics and crime-solving. You can read our constitution
here, for full information on our
aims and objectives.
How can I join?
If you didn't manage to sign up on Clubs & Socs Days, you can
still join MSWsoc by attending any of our events and paying your €4
to a committee member. You can also sign up at the information point
in the student centre in DCU. If you have any problems, please mail
the committee.
And you're award-winningly great?
Yes. we are. If "award-winningly" were a real word, it would
be the word for us. We're thrilled and very proud to have been awarded
the DCU "Best New Society" Award for 2005
and the "Best New Society in Ireland" award
at the BICS National Society Awards 2005. Both sets of judges recognised
the amazing enthusiasm and passion of the society and the sense of
fun and community in what we do.
