Strange Things DCU began life back yonder in April of 1993. The pilot episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had aired in America, and there was a lot of interest for the show here in Dublin City University. So, with the assistance of the then National Irish Star Trek Society we hosted the national premiere of the show here on one lonely Thursday evening. When over 120 people turned up on the night to see the show, we new that there was a sufficient interest in the University for a Science Fiction society. Star Trek: DCU was born.
After it's first year, when we lost Star Trek: The Next Generation we decided to broaden our horizons, and become more of a general Science Fiction group. When we realised that the quality of the Star Trek shows was dwindling rapidly, we relaunched the society in October 1995 under the new name of Strange Things DCU. With a new name, and a new committee, we became... well, erm... stranger and more unique than any other society in the college. We pioneered the World Wide Web by being the first society in the college to host a web page. Things have changed quite a bit from those early days. With a continually increasing membership each year, we have gained more credibility from the Student's Union, and as such, had more financial support. We managed to install a brand new Dolby Pro-Logic Surround Sound system into the Larkin Lecture Theatre, all the better for us to watch all of those Babylon 5 battle scenes...
Strange Things died off about 3 years ago. Membership had dwindled with the sharp decline in interest in Star Trek and Babylon 5. Now, we aim to bring the society back - for a university shall not be without a sci-fi soc!
