Day 23

Friday, 2nd May 2003, 11:15 p.m. EST, Dizzy & Britta's apartment in Chatswood, Sydney

I learned a worthwhile lesson about visiting museums yesterday. Perhaps even a valuable lesson, but probably not valuable enough to offset the monetary cost of learning it. When visiting a museum, make sure you've got enough time before it closes to do all the stuff you paid for on your ticket. Otherwise get a less comprehensive, cheaper ticket.

It was raining hard yesterday morning, so I watched some anime on my computer while waiting to see if it'd clear or if I'd be in for the day. It stopped after a while, so I got ready to go out, and then it started again. Some more sitting about caused it to stop again, so I went downtown and walked across the World's First Electrically-Operated Swingspan Bridge (so it says in the Lonely Planet guide, anyway) to the Darling Harbour area, where I planned to do all manner of bountiful things. The first to catch my eye was the Maritime Museum, so I plonked for a Big Ticket, allowing me access to the main exhibitions, the restoration area, the destroyer, the sub and the tall ship. Cool! I love poking about submarines.

I took a guided tour which was interesting, and then set out to look at the main exhibits by myself. And that took ages. I'm just brimming with information about cruise ship voyages to Australia and 18th century navigators, but I was just getting started on the last bit, the Antarctic Expeditions exhibit, when they announced the place was closing. Of course - having arisen late and then waited around, it was about two by the time I even got started, and the place closed at five. Goddamnit. So I'll have to go back and plonk down another fourteen bucks to get onto the destroyer and the sub, which I really want to do. Oh well, at least I'll get to finish the Antarctic stuff too.

I spent last night getting my computer talking to Britta's computer, and her computer talking to the printer, and then printing out a bunch of stuff to apply for jobs in ski resorts in the winter. Today I filled this stuff out and posted it (that, like the computer stuff, took longer than it really should have) and we went to watch X-Men 2, which is pretty good if you like that sort of thing, but doesn't really stand on its own, you'd need to have seen the first of the movies. There was, of course, the usual hiding from trailers for The Matrix: Reloaded and other interesting upcoming stuff.

Dizzy got a job! He'd climbed into a suit and gone for an interview on Wednesday, and they called this afternoon offering him work on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so as not to clash with his other job which is just Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. This one's in a bookshop chain (his other one is in a military book shop that also sells some models and games) and he'll have to wear a shirt and slacks, which sucks, but he's happy enough with it for the time being, although he'd like to be using his degree in journalism for something.
