This guy fought in support of the restoration of the Emperor until the Emperor
started saying that first thing he'd do would be to greatly reduce the powers
of the samurai class, so he switched sides, got beaten and ritually
disembowelled himself. But before all that he liked walking his dog.

This doggy lived in the '20s and used to come to the train station every
evening to meet his owner. Then its owner died, but the doggy kept turning up
every day until its own death about ten years later. Sure enough, if anybody
was going to commemorate that kind of loyalty with a statue, it's the
Japanese...
