I have a Dell XPS m1210. The mic input on the front of it wasn't working. I googled it and found this solution.
I changed the few lines, compiled it as instructed and did sudo make install. After this I have lost all sound apart from input
through the built in mic on the laptop's webcam.

I've tried installing alsa-base from the apt repos and compiling the alsa-drivers from source.
