Back in Washington D.C. Scully is waiting at
a bar for Mulder, while looking over some papers. Mulder arrives and
he says he has somethi to show her. They go to get a table, Deep Throat
ia at the bar watching them. Mulder tells Scully about the case, while
ahe flicks through the file. He tells her how Budahaus barrickaded
himself in his house and was hospitalized. The military aren't saying
anything and missus Budahaus hasn't seen or heard from her husband.
Mulder tells hr this kind of thing has happenened to six other pilots
enlisted at Ellen's Air Force Base. Mulder thinks there UFO's there
flying and Scully says ahe heard they had been shot down in Russia.
Mulder gets up to go to the toilet, while he is washing and drying his hands
Deep Throat appears in the mirror. He tells Mulder to stay away from
the case, that he and Scully are in danger of exposing there work. He
also tells Mulder that he is in a position to give Mulder information.
Scully is in the FBI headquarters looking at
microfilms, she rings Mulder at home and asks him if he is taking them on
UFO goose chase. Mulder hears a clicking noise on his phone line and
looks out the window to see a van parked there. He tells Scully he'll talk
to her on the plane, that the line isn't secure.
Mulder and Scully arrive in Marriette Field,
SW Idaho. They go to the Budahaus house to talk to Mrs. Budahaus. She
tells them that she first thought something was wrong when Bob, her
husband got a rash under his arms. After that things went crazy.
He became unpredictable. One time at a dinner party he put fish
flakes on his food. She found it hard to talk to him and he would become
angry. He would yell at the children for no reason and then start to
shake like he was having a seizure. Mulder asked did he talk about his
work. Mrs. Budahaus says he never talked about his work even before
he changed, but that she heard rumours of top secret work. She says
her husband was a patriot and valued his loyalty to his country above
all else and now they were being treated like they didn't exist.
Mulder asks had this happened to anyone else and Mrs. Budahaus
that a friend of hers' husband had gone crazy. They go to talk to her
and she says that stressed caused it. Her husband is out the back
doing up flys for fishing, plucking hairs from his head to use
for the flys. His wife says he got therapy and treatment and was well
looked after. She admonishes Mrs. Budahaus for bringing the FBI
to her house. They go back to Mrs. Budahaus' house and she gives them
numbers to call at the base. Scully tells her that they are staying at
the Beech Grove Motel if she needs them for anything.
Mulder and Scully discuss what could be
wrong with Col. Budahaus. Scully says that POW's suffer from the same
symptons. Mulder says these pilots shouldn't be affect like that by
stress, that they strife on stress not lose it because of it. They go
back to the motel and try the numbers. They don't have much luck,
Mulder was on hold for 45 minutes and Scully says a Col. Kissel
will meet with them a week from Friday. They go to Col. Kissel's house
to talk to him, but he won't talk. They are met by a man who introduces himself as
Paul and that he is a reporter. He asks them what they're investigating. Mulder asks him
where he'd find UFO nuts. They go to a local diner and the woman serving them shows Mulder a
picture she took of a UFO out on her back porch and that she'll sell it to him fo $20, he
buys it. Scully calls him a sucker and that she'll meet him outside. Mulder asks the woman
where he could see a UFO in the area. He meets Scully outside, who tells him the base isn't
on her map and Mulder says he knows. He got map to the base from the woman in the diner.
They arrive at Ellen's Air Force Base and Mulder heads up an
embankment to watch the sky, Scully tells him this won't look good on her field
report. Later Scully is sleeping in the car when the back windscreen blows in after an
aircraft flew low over the car. Mulder comes down the hill and brings Scully up to see the
lights in the sky. They watch them dance and fly around, doing manouveurs not possible by
ordinary planes. Scully says they're lazers but Mulder thinks they're aircraft. Suddenly the
lights disappear with a crash and a helicopter appears. Two teenagers come out through a
hole in the fence and Mulder and Scully go after them. They run way from the heliopter and
bring the kids with them.
They go to a restaurant and have burgers. Mulder and Scully ask them about the base and the
lights. The kids tell them about how they've been watching them for a year, that they have a
spot where they go to watch them. They also tell them about Yellow Base, where all these
aircraft are stored. That one time they saw one hang in the sky and hover for a while and
then fly off very quickly. They are being watched from outside by a man in a car. He is
reporting their location on a walkie talkie. They boy tells Mulder that the UFO he saw looks
exactly like the one in the picture.
They get a message that Colonel Budahaus is back and go to
talk him. Mrs. Budahaus is very upset and claims it isn't her husband. Mulder asks him his
date of birth, his kids names and a baseball question, all of which he answers right but
when he asks him a technical question about flying, Budahaus doesn't know. This leads Mulder
to believe that his memory has been drained of that knowledge. Scully says thats impossible.
