Freshers on Top Form
|
DCU 4-14 Wednesday last saw the first outing for the DCU Freshers hurling team as they made the trip across the city to the Belfield campus to take on U.C.D. Being the first game of the league campaign few knew what to expect with the players still getting familiar with each other. Fifteen minutes into the game though and you could have sworn that this team had trained together all summer long. In this opening period they blitzed the UCD defence notching up 7 points without reply. Paddy started the scoring a minute in and points followed from Neil, Charles and midfielder Ronan before the gob smacked UCD finally got off the mark. DCU led by nine points at the break, however, caution loomed in the dressing room at half time as the side faced a strong breeze in the 2nd half. With the second half less than a minute old DCU set out there stall as Neil riffled the ball to the back of the UCD net. This was to be the first of four goals for the impressive full forward who made it a day to forget for both the UCD full back and goalkeeper. Points followed from David, Ronan and Alan before UCD struck back with a goal of their own. With only fourteen minutes gone in the second half it was a case of too little too late for the southsiders as DCU led by a staggering fifteen points. In the last fifteen minutes it was evident that DCU had taken the foot off the pedal. That said, they did put up 1-1 to a single point in this final period and it could have been more but for a fine save from the UCD goalkeeper to deny Ronan a goal on the stroke of full time. The DCU management team of Damien Maher, Conor O'Loughlan and Ciaran Regan were optimistic after the match although Maher did cite a number of dubious refereeing decisions toward the end of the game. All in all though it was a good day's work and hopefully more will follow from a team that have untold potential. DCU Team: Eoin, Jack, Simon, Joe, Michael, Dave, Liam, Breandan, Ronan, Paddy, Charles, Alan, Michael, Neil, Colm. |
