Okay, here's the next to most recent happenings.
As they seemed before the most recent happenings.
With Slate fully recoverd, apart from now having a white beard and
white hair, the party decide to head to the tunnels. Slate is eager to
recover his armour, having returned from his ordeal with only his breast
plate, and even more eager to get revenge on some zombies.
On the way to the zombie place it is decided to search the cave
from whence the bear that killed Gandu came. Slate is puzzled when told
of the death of Gandu, having been in the cave previously and not noticed
any sign of inhabitation. Greebo goes ahead, and confrims that the small
cave is empty. Slate, more familiar with caves, then checks it out,
returning with two items. The first is a swirling blue/green gem similar
to the previously encountered Charonti gems. The second, a black
shortsword, nicely made according to Slate.
Reaching the tunnels the party realise that they are without a
lantern or tinderbox. Bundles of wood have been brought with them for
zombie burning purposes, and Eltric has a candle, but that is all.
Contriving a plan to allow Nickos enough light to send his 'unseen
servant' spell into the pit to recover Slate's armour, the party head in.
Slate safely sets off the pit trap, opening the hinged door in the floor.
Greebo, using 'burning hands' ignites a branch and passes it to Nickos.
After Nickos has lit the candle, Greebo casts 'affect normal fires'
increasing the brightness of both the candle and the branch significantly.
Nickos is however, unable to see any of Slate's armour in the pit,
and sends the 'unseen servant' down with the candle to better illuminate
the bottom of the pit. Soon after, the trapdoor resets, but also seems to
lock, with an audible clunk.
From the room down the corridor from the pit there is a noise,
and, yes, zombies start pouring down the corridor. Slate is below the
centre of a four way junction, Nickos to the left. Slate soon hacks
through the zombie in front of him, leaving him standing in the centre of
the junction facing a corridor, full of zombies, leading to a room, full
of zombies. With a smile, he begins swinging his axe.
Nickos, along with Meow, is left to face the one stray zombie. In
the time it takes Nickos to kill the one zombie, Slate has already killed
three or four, including Jonas. With Eltric standing behind Slate, healing
as best he can heal someone swinging an axe, Slate is making good progress
through the zombies. And despite his bloodlust, especially for zombies,
Slate has the presence of mid to remain in the corridor so as that they
can only attack him one at a time. It is at this point however that the
black guy reappears. Nickos is standing at the centre of the junction, and
the black guy is upon him quick as hell, seeming to ignore the 'grease'
spell cast in his path.
Slate and Eltric prepare to swap places, so as that Slate can get
nearer to the black guy, Eltric also preparing to cast 'protection from
evil' on Slate, in order to prevent re-possession by the black guy. At the
same time, Nickos decides to flee from the black guy, but before he does,
is hit.
The fight rages on, and soon both Eltric and Nickos are possessed,
with Greebo lying unconscious on the ground.
Nickos, Greebo and Eltric find themselves coming to. Eltric is looking
a lot worse for wear, and finds that not only has his hair turned white,
but that he feels weak, as though not nearly as strong as he used to be.
Slate, on the other hand, is standing over the group, looking quite
pleased. Surprised to be alive, the three are even more so, and pleased
too, when Slate reports that he has slain the black guy.
Eltric is in no condition to heal anyone, so Slate waits to regain
his health. An hour of sitting does the dwarf as much good as a nights
sleep for a normal man, and soon he heads back into the caves. Returning
with various items of use from the slain zombies, he then sets about
heading into the small passage where the black guy was originally
encountered. Recovering his backpack, armour and the lost lantern, the
group are soon back at the base examining the discovered items.
Eight vials and a book were what Slate had put into his backpack from the
table. Six of the vials appear to be teleport liquid of some kind, of the
other two, Nickos recognises one as smelling of a herb associated with
strength. After recovering a while, Eltric is able to use a 'detect magic'
spell to confirm the magical nature of some of the vials, and also of
the shortsword and gem found by Slate.
The book, a spellbook, has Greebo and Nickos quite excited.
Containing about eight spells from both first and second level, a few from
mid levels and even the eight level spell 'Permanency', the book is quite
a find. Needing only to carve the spells onto his spell stick, Greebo sets
about adding three new spells to his staff, all being spells unlearnable
by Nickos or specialised to Greebo's field of Alteration. Nickos, however,
needs ink if he is to add to his spellbook, and awaits the next time one
of the Knorr (Clan People) from the hills shows up to trade. Slate is also
interested in finding one of the Knorr, hoping to fing one of them
willing to train him. The Clansman who arrives has little interest in
going out of his way to help Slate in his training, or finding ink
for Nickos, but at the mention of trading knowledge of mining, it is
a different matter.
Soon enough an agreement is reached, and a small mine is set up
under Slate's supervision, unfortunately giving him no time for training.
The Knorr are slightly xenophobic, and explain that they will have no time
for the group after the mine is set up. In the months that the mine is
being set up Greebo learns more about the three teleport rooms, and
Eltric learns the art of carpentry, and acquires a horse and cart, all
gladly given by the Knorr in exchange for the mining knowledge. Nickos
gets his ink too, and sets about learning spells from the book. Luck is
not with him though, and finds himself unable to learn more spells than
able.
When the mine is finally up and running and sustainable by the
Knorr, the group head once again for the teleport room in the caves.
Greebo is convinced that it leads off this world, and hopefully to the
group's own world, the plan being to train and gather supplies before
returning to (hopefully) set up the church in the Charonti's largest city.
Bracing themselves, the party step through the portal.
Again, that's all for now.
