Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko is a
disturbed
teenager who is visited by a 6ft time-travelling bunny calling himself
Frank. Yeah, we've all been there... no, wait, that's INSANE. Well
that's what this movie is. It's also really funny, not to mention sad,
disturbing and downright scary, and the most thought provoking movie
I've seen this year. Not because of the plot, although that's pretty
mental, its just one of those movies that changes your perspective on
things. Gyllenhaal is excellent as the title character (think Tobey
Maguire except, well, good) whose real-life sister also plays his
on-screen sister. The big names are here relegated to supporting players
(Drew Barrymore (who also Executive Produced), Patrick Swayze in what is
probably his best role, and ER's Noah Wyle) but they're all great, with
nobody overdoing it in the slightest. Most of the praise though, has to
go to first-time feature writer/director, 27 year old Richard Kelly.
Let's hope he keeps up the good work. Highly Recommended.
IFC is
closed now until January, dunno if they'll still be showing it then, you
mighta missed your chance - HA!
Also, The Official Donnie
Darko Website is really worth a visit. |
