Session 22

The Party camped at The Last Bridge for the night. John stayed up with the guards talking to them for most of the night. He seemed to be gathering as much information on the political situation in Rhuadar as he could. In the morning as the party prepared to leave some travellers arrived from the East. They brought momentus news. King Mashbram had been killed. The Hillmen had apparently taken over the kingdom. Little in the way of violence had occured supposedly. Mashbram and Haltrat were the only people killed according to the travellers.

This news through things into disarray. The soliders at the bridge no longer knew if they had jobs. It was also possible that war could break out. For the party things had also changed. They had been travelling to Minas Brethil to report to Haltart. With his death their goal had been removed. A heated discussion began on where the party should go. Calorn and Thorin wished to leave Rhuadar and head East for Imaldras. Bors and Bravd wished to stay in Rhuadar, they reckoned it would be easy to get work in the unstability following the Kong's death. Claybeg also decided he wished to stay on in Rhuadar. Therefore the group decided to head to Minas Brethil to look for work. Before they left they purchased rations just in case the situation in Minas Brethil was not conducive to buying food. John also picked up some weapons. He seemed to have remembered more of his past. Supposedly he had been bailed out of some trouble by a man in Rhuadar. He had been on his way to repay that man, that man may have been Fardwith.

It took two days to travel to Minas Brethil. Sentry points were encountered twice alond the way. At both points the soliders were very unsure of what to do. The did not know whether they would still be receiving pay and supplies. At Minas Brethil Sherif Kelter was desperately trying to maintain order. Bors asked if there was any work for the party. Kelter had now short term jobs, he offered the party jobs back in the army proper but nobody wanted to be a guard again. He asked the party to stick around for a day or two to see if anything might show up, they agreed. He told the party the the Targ Arm of the Hillmen, Broggha, was now King of Rhuadar. Calorn managed to insult Kelter while attempting to explain the stupidity of Claybeg. Luckily Kelter did not seem to take too much offence.

John and Claybeg headed off to the Inns of the town to learn what they could. Bors went to visit the Blacksmith. Calorn spoke to the herbmaster. He sold him some Attaner and Belan for lots of Arlan and some gold. Calorn gave the man a large discount, still the man did not have enough gold to pay him in full. It was agreed that he would owe Calorn ten gold. Claybeg had little luck gaining information from the Inn patrons. During his fruitless attempts he met John who seemed to be having the time of his life. He had various women drapped over him and was enjoying several drinks. Eventually the party returned to their rooms. John was the last to come back, he drunkenly showed up late in the night and quickly past out.

In the morning the Dwarves and Claybeg left the Inn early. Bors and Calorn were still around when John woke up. He had managed to meet some of his old contacts and had gotten some information about jobs. Most were bleeding heart cases that offered little reward, however he had met someone who was offering serious money for something to do with a kidnapping. Supposedly the reward for the job was 500 gold. The very size of the reward gave Bors and Calorn some concerns. This level of pay would mean a seriously dangerous mission. The party spent the morning buying equipment.Calorn exchanged his loose gems for one singal valuable piece and picked up some new clothes. Bors also bought clothes and tried to find a better quality sword. The blacksmith had one in stock, but it would take him a week to prepare it for the one-handed warrior.

The party gathered at lunch to discuss the job. John had arranged for them to meet the contact in the mid-afternoon. John emphasized that the contact would be looking for a professional and co-ordinated group. In order to appear as such a group the party reckoned they need to decided on a combat leader and possible a seperate spokesperson. After much discussion it was decided to leave Bors as the leader of the party, but he would have to drop all attempts to be called Sir. He did want to be able to refer to himself as Commander Bors, nobody objected to that. The party split up so as to leave the town without attracting attention, they met John a little way outside the walls.

John went up to a large tent and spent some time talking to somemen inside it. He then returned to the party with one of the men. The man introduced himself as Belechor. He suggested the party take a walk along a hunters path into the forest to discuss the job. Belechor was looking for an experienced party, he questioned Bors about work the group had undertaken in the past. He then questioned each individual member seperately. He seemed a little concerned that with two Dwarves, an Elf and a one handed Bearning the party was a little too distinctive. Bors persuaded him that the party would be able to travel quitely. Getting to the job he explain that an important women was been held captive in Cameth Brin. The party would have to release her, this would be a serios business as it would effect the political situation in the whole of Anor. He then gave the party sometime to decide whether to take the job.

The party discussed the situation at lenght. They were hesitant because they feared that the danger level of the mission might be beyond their ability. Eventually the party agreed to take the job on condition that they receive fifty gold up front. Also if they decided that the mission is sucide at any point in the future they could quit with expenses up to fifty gold being none refundable. Belechor did not have a problem with those conditions.

The details of the mission were then explained to the party. The captive was being held in the main tower in Cameth Brin. He gave the party the names of three contacts two of which live in Talugdari. He also provided a message which would give the party a reason for entering the city. He then gave Calorn two magic items emaphising that these would have to returned. They were a ring of invisibilty and the Belt of Living Change. The belt allowed a wear to change size, shape or race up to three times a day. As a deposit on the items he took Calorn's dagger, Claybeg's magic boots and Calorn's gem. He provided the party with another map of Rhuadar. Finally he gave the target's name. She was Alquawen. Calorn recognised her as the new wife of the King of Arthedain.

The party headed back to their Inn. They discussed some plans. It was decided that the Dwarves would travel seperately and that Calorn would use the belt to pretend to be human. The human party would set out first and the Dwarves would follow a day behind. The party had a really good dinner thinking it may be one of their last. Calorn went up to the room to practice with the magic items. He managed to turn himself into a dwarf. So spent several minutes mocking. Much equipment was also purchased. John picked up various women's clothes that might be useful in helping Alquawen escape. It was decided to refer to her as Mary in future to help avoid people overhearing something they shouldn't.

The next day Bors, John, Claybed and Calorn set out for Talugderi. The journey took two day. On arriving they found an Inn from which they could use the telescope to view the tower of Cameth Brin.
