LaTeX Course, Sept. 2004

audience, screen and speaker

Room S209 was the venue for our talk on 'LaTex', given by Dr. Karol Kowalik. There were about 30 people in attendance and most signed up to become members for the year 2005.

Those who attended were from a wide variety of disciplines such as Computing, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences. This reflected the wide-ranging nature of the subject matter.

speaker in action

Karol began with a brief history of why LaTeX was invented and proceeded to explain its advantages over Microsoft Word. He then went on to the more practical aspects of how it can be installed under the Windows operating system and he gave a litany of websites where resources, such as editors, can be found. He concluded by showing how quickly and easily document layouts can be changed by demonstrating the use of LaTeX for preparing a simple document.

audience panorama

The number of questions at the end was a good indication that people found the talk very interesting and were eager to learn more and to use LaTex themselves. The discussions continued outside as tea, coffee and biscuits were served to the chatting postgrads.
