Summer events, 2005
Over the summer of 2005, the PostGrad Society organised a number of events. The most successful was the Summer Party, in June. It was held for the first time in the Autobahn Pub, and it looks likely that we'll be returning there in the future.
In terms of trips, there was a well-attended Celtic Trip at the end of June, and a canoe trip (in association with the Canoe Club) in August. Sports continued throughout the summer, although they weren't as well attended as during the winter (which makes sense, when you think about it).
The Soc also organised a free team-building workshop in June, and a Matlab workshop in September, demonstrating that while we may organise social events, we also work on supplementing the academic resources provided by DCU.
Pool Competition, April 2005
A group of postgrads got together to challenge each other in some friendly yet competitive games of Pool. All who attended enjoyed a great evening Read full report.
Advanced LaTeX Workshop, April 2005
After the success of the first Latex Talk, this follow-up event, held again by Dr. Karol Kowalik, was designed as a workshop. The 15 participants mainly from engineering and computing now met in a computer lab. Karol firstly provided them with a free CD containing software such as the complete Latex system and editors along with example documents.
The first exercise for the participants was to install Latex on the lab PCs with Windows 2000 operating system. Subsequently they were guided through the examples step by step. These ranged from creating and modifying simple documents and inserting graphics up to practical tips to how to create an own thesis. Thanks to Karol's supervision none of the many questions remained unanswered, so people learned quite a lot despite the limited time. After the workshop tea, coffee and cookies were served and participants took this opportunity for a deeper discussion.
Postgraduate Conference in Translation Studies, April 2005
No report available.
Postgrads go to The Celtic Ball, March 2005
Since we are too busy to organise our own ball, we decided to go to the Celtic Ball. At least 11 members went and had a great time.
Open Mic Nights, March 2005
People of all levels of ability tried out their act and hone their skills in front of a live and receptive audience. The atmosphere in the Beta Bar was really great on both nights.
- Heat 1: Wed, 16th
- Heat 2: Tue, 22nd
Advanced Word Workshop, March 2005
Having been more than six times overbooked, this workshop proved that there is high interest among students in mastering MS Word's formatting, numbering, footnoting and bibliographies.
Ice Skating, Jan. 2005
This was a first for some of us, as evident by the soaked clothes on the Luas home, while others use the time on the ice to fine tune their impressive Torvill and Dean impressions. Most of us made decent progress around the rink avoiding the occasional puddle of water and the odd stranded child on the ice. Those not accustomed to public transport in Dublin got to sample the long awaited delightful, if a bit crowded, Luas trip on the Red Line. A quick ramble around the Smithfield environs yielded hot beverages from the local subway, just what was needed to survive the "Ice cold".
Table Quiz, Dec. 2004
12 teams racked their brains over "hard questions" from various areas.
Workshops, Dec. 2004
We started December with two linguistics workshops on 'Web-Based Corpus Software' and 'Advanced corpus analysis and alignment tools'. No details available.
Open Mic Night, Nov. 2004
Thanks to the collaboration between DCU Postgraduate Society, Music Society, Drama Society and TradSoc, people of all levels of ability were able to try out their act for the first time or hone their skills in front of a live and receptive audience. Read full report.
Alchemist Cafe, Nov. 2004
Two talks ('Climate Change' on the 9th and 'Stem Cell Therapy' on the 23rd) in the Alchemist Cafe have been sponsored by DCU Postgraduate Society in November 2004.
General Meeting, Nov. 2004
Our new secretary Katie Wong and three general members of the committee, Adriana Garcia, Andreas Hillman and Zhang Zhanhie, have been elected.
Viking Splash Tour, Oct. 2004
We had great fun on this land and water Dublin tour, done in reconditioned World War II vintage amphibious military vehicles called "Ducks". After the tour, we went to "Foley's" pub to chat about our individual impressions and to throw in few suggestions for the next outing. So make sure to check out our web site for new events! Read full report by Emira and Ciaran.
Welcome back Postgraduate Party, Oct. 2004
On Friday 8th October, our first party of the year kicked off at 7pm, with almost 100 postgrads in attendance. A surprising amount of people came early to avail of the free sandwiches and sausages! As the Beta bar began to fill up, the lights were dimmed and DJ Gary Craig on the decks filled the air with some ambient hiphop sounds. Later, after the bar closed, some of the more determined party people continued the festivities in the Slipper on the Ballymun Road.
LaTeX Course, Sept. 2004
Ireland's Eye & Howth Trip, Aug. 2004
A group of six met at the quay of Howth and took a boot to Ireland's Eye. We climbed its elevations and fought our way through fields of man-high bushes back to the beach where Khaled swam in the cold water for a frightening long time. Back to Howth, we ate something and enjoyed the nice weather sitting in front of a cafe in Abbey Street. While cycling back to DCU, we passed through St. Anne's Park with its beautiful rose garden.
Games Night, July 2004
Held in the postgraduate function room, the games night had a game to suit everyone. Laptops and two projectors displayed the computer gaming action in life-size on the walls as we played MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch and Unreal Tournament 2004. Others were more content to play the property markets in Monopoly and buy the roads around the City Centre. So, next time you are shopping on Henry Street ... remember you're on my property!
Galway Trip, June 2004
Our trip to Galway began on midday on Friday as we piled our luggage into the cars and set off for the west coast. After settling in to the lovely Woodquay hostel, we went to enjoy the Galway nightlife.
The next morning, the group travelled south to the cliffs of Moher to marvel at their immense size and beauty. We had a picnic on some cliffs and then those brave enough to endure the atlantic ocean went surfing for two hours in Lahinch.
On the final day of our trip, we explored the Salthill amusements and then journeyed through the Burren region of Connemara. Everyone had a great time - and we have the trip to Ulster to look forward to!
Hiking (Laragh to Glendalough), May 2004
We went hiking from Laragh to Glendalough, saw the hills of Wicklow, fantastic scenery. Read full Report on Hiking Trip by organiser, Deirdre Hynes.
Dublin Zoo Visit, May 2004
It was a lovely day out. Unfortunatly, there are no photos and no detailed report.
Postgraduate End-of-Semester Party, April 2004
There are no pictures (to my knowledge) this time - which is probably a good thing! Over 100 people filled the Beta Bar in the Hub. The diversity of dancing styles to the music of DJ Kev's mobile disco reflected the multi-ethnic mix of people who attended [or just their level of craziness ;-) ] The party finished in the early hours in the postgrad function room with free LIDL French beer for those adventurous types.
Bright Colours Only - Helix Space, Mar 2004
A small group of us met in the Helix bar before the show, got to know each other and then joined the queue for a truly original show. Set up like a typical Irish living room, our gracious hostess passed round the whiskey, sandwiches and biscuits. The show was a poignant and often hilarious examination of the process of death and all that surrounds the rituals we associate with it. In turn, it managed to show us the importance of life and with enjoying it before we all end up in 'the box'. Am I getting too deep? :-)
This is the second time the show has been on in the Helix and is definitely worth a look if it comes back again! Report
Paintball Trip, Mar 2004
On that fateful Wed morning, 31 adventurers boarded the busses and headed out to Wicklow to run around a forest and shoot each other with bullets of paint. Craziness was a prerequisite for success on the commando missions we were assigned to. Luckily craziness was in abundance on the day and a great time was had by all our crew. Another report, pictures of the trip.
Welcome Back Party and TQII, Feb 2004
Only the second table-quiz ever run by the society but it went very well; at the end, some people were even asking when the next one will be on! There were many spot-prizes given out, including a CD of classic love songs, a book on flirting and a copper kettle. It was just before Valentine's day, hence the romantic theme. Another short report, pictures of the night.
Christmas Party! - Dec 2003
Despite many of the taught masters postgrads being very busy studying for their exams, a good few of us made it down to Addison Lodge to enjoy a few pints, sandwiches and cocktail sausages. Mmmmm, all this talk of food is making me hungry.
Table Quiz, Oct 2003
| 13 teams turned up in the Addison Lodge to tackle John's tough questions. A great night was had by all and there were prizes galore! ...including a mighty Pumpkin! |

Not all events are organised by the committee! If there's something you'd like to see DCU postgrads get together over, an event you'd like to see, why not get involved, or just suggest it to us and then lend a hand?
