Kylemore Karting, 14th October 2009

Event Report:

DCU KartSoc went to it's first championship event of the 2009/10 year on 14th October. We made the trip to Kylemore where we raced 2 separate events on tracks 1 and 2. Overall the day was brilliant fun at the impressive and newly refurbished facility.

On track 1, as expected, the final was contested by 2 Hall of Famers, current DCU Champion Mark Egan and former champion Willie Coyne. Willie, having started from 7th place in the A Final, managed to battle through the field after the first few laps but by that stage Egan had pulled far enough away that catching him and then overtaking him would have been near impossible, as he set the lap record for the day during the final. Noel Williams raced well to lead the First Year Championship at the end of the day by finishing 3rd in the A Final. Gemma Drennan also competed well to lead the Ladies Championship and beat a number of lads on the way to a C Final victory :O.

Track 2 saw the 2nd group of DCU Karters race on the upstrairs track for the afternoon. A notable performance from rookie 2nd year Donal Rochford saw him set the lap record for the day as he chased down Jeff Dalton in the A-Final. Unfortunately for Donal, despite a hotly and (unusually :P) fairly contested race, he could not get past Teesside driver Jeff. Strong drives from Clare Grogan and Marianne Ryan saw them finish up the day as not only the leading drivers from the Ladies Championship but also the 1st Year Championship on this track.
