Aikido
Aikido is a modern, non-violent, non-aggressive Japanese martial art that was developed early in the 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba, commonly referred to as O-Sensei meaning "Great teacher". In Japanese, Aikido means "the way of harmony with the force and principle of nature." Attackants are subdued through the use of locks, pins and throws. Techniques are practiced in pairs with partners alternating between the role of attacker and defender. The Aikidoist's goal is for self development and education through the discipline and expression of their art. DCU Aikido club welcomes all students to join the club. With our many year experience you can enjoy the practice with senior students. Our classes are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8pm and you can get more info on our website: www.dcu.dublinaikido.com or else check the federation website: www.dublinaikido.com. We are also part of the French Aikido Federation strong of more than 60.000 students and travel often to France to train.

American Football
American Football is becoming more and more popular in this country. At the end of 2004, there were 6 full teams and 2 development teams in the Irish League. Teams from Ireland have played (and beat!) teams from both Europe and America, as well as winning various European Tournaments against top class European teams. The 2004/5 season is the first for the DCU Saints, and we have a lot of plans for the year. We focus on both Full Contact and Flag Football (non-contact) to suit everyone's tastes and we have both men and women playing for us. We also play in Intervarsity games against the other team in the University of Limerick.

Gaelic club, Men
The history of the Gaelic Football Club is along and glorious one with many colourful and charismatic people linked to the club. Our president Fr. John Gilligan is a legend amongst men and our Development officer Tom O'Donnell works tirelessly. One would wonder if it would be easier for him to get a phone implant. Our coaches Niall Moyna, Dermot Morris, Micheal McCafferty and John Horan are there sleet, snow or rain and if you want to play they will help you The Gaelic Football Club fields four teams and may possibly field a 5th team in the near future. These teams are our Senior team which is our first team, our Intermediate team which is our second team and two first year - freshers teams that compete as the "A" and "B" teams. The fifth team we mentioned is a junior team. This means that we will have about 140 active playing members as 150 players will compete for DCU this year 2001-02. Three of our teams have got to the All-Ireland 1/4 finals and we will be running an internal blitz in late spring.

Sailing
DCU Sailing Club is enjoying a renaissance recently and the year has started promisingly with a number of our introductory sailing sessions. Instruction is provided by a number of the qualified instructors we have as members. Our aim is to introduce as many individuals to the sport as possible and to generally get people out on the water having fun. Even if you've only navigated in the bath we want you on board ! We use both dinghys and larger cruising yachts. Gear is not important; we provide lifejackets and some oilskins. New or old to the membership you'll enjoy a relaxed social atmosphere where everybody knows everybody at the end of the day. If it all sounds too easy, check out our noticeboard in the Henry Grattan building on the ground floor opposite CG 74...there are some photos etc of our first sessions...
